ELIXIR CONSUMERS + Submittable
Answer funder application forms in Submittable with responses sized to every field limit.
- Setup
- About 10 minutes
- Connection
- Applicant side: question import (paste or PDF of the form) and a character-counted, field-by-field export for copying into the funder's Submittable form. Account owner side: the Submittable public API with an API key from your own Submittable account, read-only, for organizations that regrant or run their own programs on Submittable.
Many foundations, corporate giving programs and state arts councils take applications through Submittable forms. Applicants cannot write into a funder's form through an API, so ELIXIR CONSUMERS parses the funder's questions, drafts each answer to the field's character or word limit, and gives you a field-by-field copy sheet. If your own organization runs Submittable to regrant funds, ELIXIR CONSUMERS can also read your submissions through the Submittable API.
What syncs
| Direction | Object | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| <- Inbound | Form questions | Question text, field type and character or word limits captured from the funder's form or guidelines. |
| -> Outbound | Field responses | One answer per field, counted the way Submittable counts characters, ready to paste. |
| -> Outbound | Attachments | Budget, board list and audit files renamed and converted to the formats the form accepts. |
| <- Inbound | Your own submissions | For account owners: submissions and form responses from your Submittable projects, read through the API for reporting. |
Grant workflows it powers
- Answer a 14-question community foundation form where every field has a different character cap, without trimming answers by hand.
- Reuse the same organizational history across three Submittable applications in one cycle, each cut to its own limit.
- For a regranting intermediary, pull your own Submittable submissions into a funder report on how subawards were made.
Data security posture
- ELIXIR CONSUMERS never asks for your login to a funder's Submittable portal.
- API keys for your own Submittable account are stored encrypted and used read-only.
- Copy sheets are generated in your tenant and are not shared with the funder or Submittable.

Questions, answered
Can ELIXIR CONSUMERS submit my application through Submittable?
No. Submittable forms belong to the funder, and applicants submit them through the funder's portal. ELIXIR CONSUMERS prepares answers that fit each field so the submission is copy and review.
Does character counting match Submittable?
ELIXIR CONSUMERS counts characters including spaces and line breaks, which is how most Submittable fields count. Check any field that states a different rule in its help text.
When would I use the Submittable API connection?
Only if your organization owns a Submittable account, for example to run a regranting program or a scholarship. Applicants do not need it.
