ELIXIR CONSUMERS + NIH eRA Commons
Prepare NIH applications and RPPR content, then submit through ASSIST or Grants.gov.
- Setup
- About 10 minutes
- Connection
- File package export. NIH applications go in through ASSIST, Grants.gov Workspace or a registered S2S system, and RPPRs are entered in eRA Commons by the PI and signing official. ELIXIR CONSUMERS produces PDF attachments sized to NIH page limits and RPPR section text you paste or upload. NIH-scoped opportunity data is read from the public Grants.gov APIs; there is no third-party write access to eRA Commons.
eRA Commons is where NIH tracks applications, Notices of Award and annual RPPR progress reports. ELIXIR CONSUMERS drafts Specific Aims support material, biosketch inputs, facilities text and RPPR sections from your vault, and exports them as files your signing official or PI uploads through ASSIST, Grants.gov or the RPPR module in Commons. ELIXIR CONSUMERS never logs in to Commons as a user.
What syncs
| Direction | Object | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| <- Inbound | NIH funding opportunities | NOFO number, activity code, receipt dates and page limits read from public Grants.gov listings and the NIH Guide notice text you attach. |
| <- Inbound | Award documents | Notices of Award you upload are parsed for project period, budget period and reporting due dates. |
| -> Outbound | Application attachments | Research Strategy, Facilities and Other Resources, and Project Summary as PDFs checked against NIH page limits. |
| -> Outbound | RPPR sections | Accomplishments, products and participant sections drafted from your program data for the PI to review and enter in Commons. |
Grant workflows it powers
- Turn a year of lab data and publication records into a first-pass RPPR the PI edits rather than writes from a blank form.
- Keep institutional Facilities and Other Resources text current across every NIH application from your sponsored programs office.
- Track RPPR due dates for each active award from the Notice of Award instead of a spreadsheet.
Data security posture
- No eRA Commons credentials are requested or stored.
- Unpublished research content stays in your tenant and is never used to train shared models.
- Every drafted sentence links to the vault document it came from, so the PI can confirm authorship before submission.

Questions, answered
How does ELIXIR CONSUMERS fit NIH's 2025 policy on AI-developed applications?
NIH notice NOT-OD-25-132 says applications substantially developed by AI will not be considered the original ideas of the applicant. ELIXIR CONSUMERS is used for institutional and administrative sections and for assembling the PI's own material; the scientific ideas and Research Strategy must remain the investigator's work. Your sponsored programs office should set the policy for how it is used.
Can ELIXIR CONSUMERS submit an RPPR for me?
No. RPPRs are submitted in eRA Commons by the PI and the signing official. ELIXIR CONSUMERS drafts the section text from your data for them to review and enter.
Does it know about the six-application limit?
ELIXIR CONSUMERS can flag when a PI in your workspace has multiple NIH applications planned for the same calendar year so your office can check them against the NIH per-PI limit that took effect for the September 25, 2025 receipt date.
